"so much depends” is a choral setting of William Carlos Williams’ famous 1923 poem “The Red Wheelbarrow.” The poem’s message is simple: all things, even wheelbarrows, have their purposes. "so much depends”  is a comforting reminder for everyone of their unique importance. The text is set in a variety of ways throughout the piece–– first, as a lush, pentatonic harmonization; second, as a lively quasi-fugue; third, as a dramatic solo section with a minimalist-style accompaniment; and lastly, as a variation of the first setting of the text. It is difficult for one to realize and accept that their very existence is important and necessary. With the four very different but connected lives of the poem’s sixteen words, “so much depends” expresses the difficulty that is required of in order to realize and accept the importance and necessity of their very being.
