I began my studies at IU in 2023 with Dr. Don Freund. In recent years, all freshman composition majors study with Prof. Freund. Their first assignment is to compose for a solo instrument. I chose to compose a piece for trumpet for my new friend Sophia Nguyen. 'mountaineering' is a piece I composed for my dad to remember the time we spent together in New Mexico backpacking for two weeks. It was a special experience that brought us closer to each other. We woke up every morning in a different place, but with a beautiful view each time. 'mountaineering' is a reflection on the sunrises and sunsets, summits, critters, flowers, and thoughtful conversations that I experienced with my dad.
