FOXFIRE

instrumentation: children's choir (SSA voices), piano
year composed: 2024 | 6 minutes
I composed FOXFIRE for the Composers Competition by Audi Sommerkonzerte in cooperation with Arcis Saxophone Quartet and LauschWerk. The picture I chose to respond to is called “GlowingMushrooms.”
“FOXFIRE” invites listeners to visit a magical and mysterious forest. Upon entering the forest, the visitor becomes at peace. Their attention is captured by the vibrating, blue-green glow of the bioluminescent fungi. These fungi remind the visitor that “the earth is a melon, brimming with juice,” abundant with life and interconnected. The visitor is lulled to sleep by the gentle sounds of the forest’s hidden beauty.
The music portrays the foray through meticulous dynamic markings, lush modal harmonic language, pointillistic counterpoint, a Neo-minimalist style, and cyclic structure. The saxophone quartet accompanies, doubles, overlays, and interplays with the chorus. The saxophone-chorus combination allows for timbral exploration that recreates the shimmering qualities of the fungi.
