Blueberry Dreams

instrumentation: SATB voices divisi, flute, harp
year composed: 2023 | 6 minutes
While I also wrote the text, my connection with the words is not so obvious (my grandmothers both are alive and have never taken me blueberry picking). My choice to write as i have done was influenced by my reflecting on materiality vs. spirituality. There is often much disdain for materiality in the so-called 'good' culture. We must purge ourselves of it so that we can become more spiritually-invested in ourselves and in the world. I, however, disagree. everything is good in moderation - even a balance between the physical and the metaphysical is healthier than a heavy closeness with either. I believe that materials, such as blueberries, have the power to connect us with people and with parts of ourselves we wouldn't connect with otherwise. I chose a blueberry because typically, they are not especially exciting, but the speaker can not distance the idea of their lovely grandmother from this simple fruit. My theories are not fully-formed, but I feel confident that materiality is not bad and that it can be a helpful tool in understanding our Souls and those of others.
